Transitioning Careers
After starting my role as a project manager for a general contractor in the D.C. area, I gained valuable experience. However, over time, the work began to feel repetitive. When an opportunity in Guam arose, I viewed it as both a professional challenge and a personal milestone. Because Planate Management Group was seeking a Project Manager, I applied. Shortly after, my wife and I relocated to Guam within a month.
Since then, the transition has proven deeply rewarding. Not only did it advance my career, but it also introduced an entirely new lifestyle. Moving from winter in D.C. to the tropics felt like stepping into a permanent vacation. Moreover, few places offer the chance to walk to the beach before work or dive after hours.
Life in Guam
Living in Guam has been an incredible experience. For example, we live just minutes from the beach and have built a close-knit community on the island. Most of our time is spent outdoors, whether attending local festivals or hosting casual backyard BBQs. In addition, the Chamorro people are among the most welcoming and generous I have ever met. Often, beach gatherings turn into spontaneous invitations and instant inclusion.
Although Guam is remote and some mainland conveniences remain limited, that distance brings a refreshing perspective. For instance, when the internet goes out, we hike. Similarly, when the power cuts, we head to the beach. As a result, life here feels grounded in simplicity, resilience, and connection.
Professional Role & Challenges
As the Project Manager supporting post-disaster recovery at a U.S. military installation, I oversee submittal reviews, RFI coordination, design drawing requirements, cost estimating, scheduling, and on-site assessments. At the same time, I collaborate closely with Planate’s Global Technical Support Center to deliver tailored design solutions in a fast-paced recovery environment.
Equally important, coordinating between the client, the on-site team, and our remote support teams ensures both quality and timeliness. Our local administrative and engineering staff form the backbone of our efforts. They bring dedication, technical expertise, and a solution-focused mindset. Ultimately, I take pride in what we accomplish together.
Working in a Unique Environment
However, Guam presents distinct design and construction challenges. The climate and seismic conditions demand structural resilience, and buildings must withstand winds of up to 210 mph. Additionally, corrosion, frequent typhoons, and extended shipping timelines directly affect material selection and project schedules.
What truly makes Planate effective in this environment is our strategic support system. Specifically, our Subic office delivers essential technical and staffing support. Because of this approach, we adapt quickly and deploy the right expertise when it matters most.
Key Projects and Community Impact
Over time, Planate has supported projects across more than 100 buildings at a major military installation in Guam. One notable highlight involved a full interior renovation of a community-focused facility. This project required round-the-clock coordination to meet strict construction deadlines tied to reopening timelines.
Beyond infrastructure, Planate actively invests in community engagement. Whenever possible, we hire locally. Additionally, we support initiatives such as STEM Week at Simon Sanchez High School, where we promote careers in engineering and design.
Looking Ahead
As a result of our collective efforts, our teams have completed two major initiatives under Guam’s broader recovery program. One team led the facility assessments and scope development. Meanwhile, a second team supported engineering and implementation. Together, these efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions.
Looking forward, I see strong opportunities for Planate to expand its presence in Guam. In particular, we can grow both our service offerings and third-party inspection capacity. As Guam continues to develop, Planate remains well-positioned to pursue larger and more complex roles.
Support from the Philippines Office
Moreover, our Asia-Pacific team—especially in the Philippines—plays a critical role in our success. The Global Technical Support Center provides rapid-turnaround support for detailed drawings, cost estimates, and technical reviews. As a result, their speed and reliability give us a clear operational advantage across time zones.
By integrating field experience with technical design support, our teams stay aligned, agile, and responsive. Consequently, our communication workflows ensure visibility and control from concept through completion.
