As the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic was shutting down business operations across the world, Planate Management Group (Planate) was answering the call for construction management support to help design, build, and inspect alternate care facilities (ACFs) intended for surge capacity along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Planate’s architecture and engineering services team drew from years of experience and expertise in healthcare facility construction management to develop design criteria enabling these ACFs to either treat patients infected with COVID-19 or help with an overflow of standard patients from local hospitals. Construction plans consisted of retrofitting existing buildings or building temporary field hospitals from tents or modular units. When finished, the ACFs would be capable of immediately providing temporary healthcare services in non-traditional settings and reducing the burden on hospitals and other traditional healthcare facilities.

Planate also conducted design reviews and deployed construction managers (CMs) to help build these alternate care facilities. Safety inspections examined the set-up, conditions, and utilities of the existing and temporary facilities for compliance with health, life safety, and environmental laws and regulations to ensure a safe environment for patients affected by the COVID-19 healthcare emergency.
